Receiving regular dollar cheques/checks

Hello, everyone.
I have just come into the position of receiving a sum of money each quarter from the US - for between $200-$300. I'm in a quandry what to do with it.
Do I open an off-shore dollar account? Then I am still charged for depositing a cheque (£6-25) or for receiving an EFT (£7-15). And some banks charge an annual subscription.
Do I deposit it in my sterling account? Then I pay charges and (usually) lose on the exchange rate.
I don't think I can open an account in the US because I'm not resident there.
So..... Any suggestions would be welcome.
thank you
