sold ebay item return as uncollected

I sold an item on ebay, which was paid for and dispatched next day 2nd class recorded on the 28th September, I have now received the item back, with a royal mail sticker on it saying it was not called for.

I am assuming my first action should be to email the buyer ? and what happens if she doesn't reply, I've tried looking on ebay but can't find the answer. I have looked her up and from her feedback still seems to be active and buying during this time.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would e-mail them and take it from there. I think your within your rights to ask for them to pay for postage to send them again. They may well have not got a card from their postman or the postman didn't even attempt to deliver and just returned them to the sorting office saying no-one was in.
I sold an item worth £20 which was returned as un called for. Sent several e-mails to the buyer but didn't ever get any response so put them safe and waited for them to contact me which they never did.
Anyway wait and see what they say and then decide if you want to charge them for being sent again or if your going to asorb the cost of doing so. If you really can't agree on sending them again then I would refund the cost of them minus the postage cost.

its more common with RD items
recipients often dont realise they are only held for 7 days
  • I've had this a few times....I usually just hang on to it and see what happens.....more often than not the buyer realises and you just ask them to resend the postage and zoom it off...after a month or so....re sell it if you've not heard from them!

Lol this reminds me of when I got a free DVD on Money Making off a website. I put it on eBay and it sold for £12!!, received the DVD back in the post months later.....emailed the buyer a few times and got no reply. I think he really needed the DVD though in reality. If hes gonna be giving money away to sellers, thats not the right way to make money :)
  • Didnt anyone refund the buyer, minus postage costs if they didnt reply? If you just kept the money because they didnt contact you... thats theft in my book!

Mine was no longer registered, but i got his email address off Paypal after trawling through a massive list.

Tried my best to contact, doesnt make me a thief at all. How rude, most people wouldnt even bother trying, I know that someone never bothered with me when I didnt pick a book up and it went back to them. It was only a cheap book so I didnt bother asking them to repost it, mostly through laziness.

If there is no way of contacting the buyer and therefore no one to send the goods to or give a refund to what are you meant to do with the money and how can it be considered theft?
It hasn't happened to me for a while, but has happened in the past, items returned marked 'addressee unknown' and then bouncing emails.
