If you're a couple, turn in in a smart suit and wedding dress - almost guarantees an upgrade!
As an aside, we spent a couple of nights in a posh spa hotel straight after our wedding. The missus had got changed out of her dress before we turned up though. They had got the booking dates wrong, but managed to get us the last room as someone else had not turned up (as there was a wedding on in the hotel). The manager asked us if we had a copy of our reservation, and you should have seen the horrifed look on her face when we said "No, we'd come straight from our own wedding reception!". The next two nights we were moved into the enormous Honeymoon suite costing £400 a night instead of our paid for £140! It was worth it for the stress and hassle of hanging round for 45 minutes in the middle of nowhere wondering if we were going to have to take a 40 mile taxi ride back home!

Even if you havent just got married?!! ;)

  • Does mentioning that you are on your honeymoon help? Next April I will be!

Two years ago we went to Sardinia and Sicily for our honeymoon and stayed in four hotels, two gave us champagne/fruit in the room and two didn't.

We booked all the hotels online (follow previous advice and get the hotel/location/room/price you want). Then maybe a week before we got married my fiance called the hotel directly to "re-confirm" and told them why we were staying and that we were looking forward to it. Didn't ask for anything.

One of the upgrades was a Melia and was also a room upgrade. The duty manager was really nice there and she also gave us champagne for my fiance's birthday :j even though we hadn't mentioned it - she had got the details from the passport.

One of the ones that didn't do anything was also a big chain and they actually put us in a room with a 3/4 size double bed with no other furniture and a window onto the fire escape where they stored the vacuum cleaners... nice. Needless to say we didn't unpack but went down to reception clutching print outs of the room description from the internet and were upgraded into a room that was probably four times the size (so about normal then )

Still, the best advice is BE NICE. Even if you are complaining make it clear that it is not the fault of the person you are talking to!

    Good luck...
  • When you get to the desk, say you want to check in but ask straight away for some help finding a restaurant or something. When they tell you, say how grateful you are for the help and how you really appreciate it because you're not from the area and proceed to check in.

When I worked on a hotel reception, I was so pleased I'd helped someone out and made them happy that I wanted to upgrade them too!
  • We got nothing extra for our honeymoon at either the airport hotels, resort or flights
