Anyone else problem software upgrade for 2nd gen 16gb Ipod touch?

My DH upgraded the software on his ipod touch 2nd generation 16gb to 3.1.2 and it has killed his ipod! he tried several times to get it to work, put it into recovery mode, phoned Apple Customer services but they were no more help than the website. We took it into our local Apple store and basically they said it was a hardware problem, would cost loads to fix or he could buy an 8gb reconditioned one or a brand new 32gb. You got a £20 discount for 'recycling' your old one...??

A few questions.
1. Is it really a hardware problem or is this software upgrade just not compatible with 2nd gen Ipod touches. You can't go back to the old software on a 2nd gen either which is really frustrating.

2. Does anyone else have this problem? If this is a well known fault then Apple should be telling their customers and giving us a new ipod for free. if the software doesn't work with 2nd gen they are basically killing your ipod so you buy a newer one! They cannot tell us what error 14 (which appeared on the ipod touch is) which must mean something. We are taking their word for it that it is not fixable, I just don't believe them.

I'm not that familiar with tech spec but have tried to convey what happened to our 2nd gen ipod touch, just want some feedback if anyone else has had problems. Please don't shoot me down in flames!

its alot of money and the ipod touch only lasted 18 months, it was working perfectly til the software upgrade. Grrr:eek:

  • Unfortunately our Ipod touch 16gb 2nd gen was bought in the US when we were on holiday 18 months ago so no, its out of warranty. Just doesn't seem to have lasted very long for the money its costs. We traded it in a for a 32gb 3rd gen but am annoyed at having to spend so much money (ok they didn't make us buy it/twist our arms !) so soon. I hope this one lasts a lot longer, we've taken out the extra one year Apple warranty this time. Their discount is pretty rubbish for recycling your old one, a measly 10%. They only seem interested in selling you a new one and telling you its really expensive to fix, Apple make their own pricing structure, so they are actively discouraging their customers from having their items repaired.

I just think Apple could do better with regards to the cost of repairs of their products and be able to explain exactly what the problem is, instead of saying we don't know what that means its a hardware issue, head office don't tell us what it means. Allegedly they 'listen to their customers' ? ! Explain things better when things go wrong!

They offered a repair though, which without a warranty is what you get. If they said it would "cost a lot" did you actually find out whether the "alot" was more, or substantially less than the cost of a new 32gb one?

  • I had a reply all typed out then it vanished when I tried to post. To be quick, they said it would cost as much to repair it as it would to buy a new one. I can't remember the price as my kids were hassling me while the SA spoke to my husband. Yes it would have been cheaper to have a repair but it sounded like you only got an 8gb refurb back as they do not do 16gb anymore. My Dh decided he would rather pay 199 (cost with 10% off) for a 32gb as he did not want to go back to less memory. It was our own choice that we chose the more expensive option. All I am saying is that Apple is allegedly a premium product and I would expect things to last longer that they manufacture. They seem only interested in selling and do not convince you in any shape or form that a repair is a good option. the also give no explanation what is wrong other than the hardware is kaput. Well prior to an upgrade of their software the Ipod touch was working perfectly which suggests it is not compatible.

I would say, put the old one on Ebay as someone will either fix it or use the spare parts. But... there may be personal data on it that re-appears if the device is re-activated. Apple is being !!!!-poor in their whole attitude. Smart people appreciate and will pay a premium for such design... and the same smart people will quicky revolt when alternative products appear that are more sustainable (have to admid, I have a Touch as there is no competiition....yet).

If you're really dissatisfied, send an email to Steve Jobs at steve@apple.com.

If you're polite, succinct, and you give it a descriptive title, you stand a good chance of getting a reply.

Just say you installed the software update, and it bricked your iPod, which resulted in you having to buy a new one. You choose an Apple product because you expected a premium brand to be of good quality, and on this occasion, your expectations were not met.

I know of several people who have received personal responses from him.
