Tesco Pet Insurance...my experience!
On Saturday evening - one of my cats was clipped by a car - thankfully she made it home despite a nasty fracture to her back leg. My vets surgery admitted her within the hour for pain relief, fluids and antibiotics and stabilisation over the weekend. The plan being to x-ray her this morning and hopefully repair the fracture. I contacted my insurers at 8AM, explained the situation and asked for pre-authorisation urgent/potentially limb sparing. I am shocked by their point blank refusal to do this....instead, I am expected to pay out and (postal strikes permitting) await a claim form which will be sent to me within the next 5 days! The surgery bill is expected to be aprox. £500-£700 and I have already paid the emergency consultation of £105 on admission. I am informed by my vets that whilst many other insurance providers will give pre-authorisation in such circumstances; they often have difficulty dealing with my particular insurance provider. I am particular shocked by such a serious gap in cover in view of the urgency of treatment required by my pet and would have expected better from this "brand". Having insisted that this form be faxed this morning and on a call back before 10AM - I am hopefully that pre-authorisation will be given, if not I am fortunate enough to be able to cover most of the costs in advance. But this does defeat the purpose of having such a policy which I took mainly to cover unforeseen emergency care needs for both my cats.
If anybody has had similar experiences with this insurer or can offer further advice, please contact me. I am appalled and intend to pursue this matter in full, irrespective of this morning’s outcome. If you have to pay out in full and then claim back later – what’s the point in insurance.....if you can’t pay at the point of care this is sure to impact on the quality and outcome of care and treatment available....!!!! After this...I am finished with ALL Tesco products and services.....

(Also: a very big thank you for the professionalism and excellent care provided by all the staff at the surgery.)

Having anticipated a struggle...I am pleased to say that it's been sorted! The insurer is allowing the vet to claim their costs directly, so I needn't go to the building society after all! Marvellous!!!
