Naughty Pup

Morning,

I am slightly concerned about my 2 and a half year old staff.

She is so well behaved and extremely affectionate but recently she has been acting like a "spoilt child". Her usual routine is a 2/3 walk a day plus if she needs the toilet she will sit by the back doors to be let out. She is very good and knows not to jump on beds and get up on certain sofas, also she doesnt beg and will eat her usual dry biscuits without a fuss.

But recently she has done the complete opposite, I have taken her to the vets for a check over incase I am missing something. Last week she went to toilet on the bed which she has never done and she isnt eating her food until she knows she'll get none of our dinner.

I am at a loss, could this be due to the change in the weather or could this be a "naught child" phase?? I am really concerned as it has been going on nearly 4 weeks and its just so out of character!

Thanks

Chantelle

  • With the food, put it down for 20 mins and then lift it and throw it away if not touched. A few missed meals will soon get her back on track

Is she due her season? I often hear of b1tches who take decide to mess in the middle of a bed just before they come into season

Other then that Im afraid Im at a loss

Try not to think of her acting like a spoilt brat and look at why she's gone to the toilet on your bed. :)

Has her routine changed in the past month? Has something else changed in your home? Has anything happened that could have caused anxiety or stressed? Is she speyed?

Would you rather eat dry kibble or yummy warm wet food? ;) If someone's given her tit bits and then stopped that could be why she's started not eating.

Agree try putting her food down (what are you feeding out of interest?) and then picking up later and not putting down til the next meal.

What did the Vet say about it?

  • Wow thank you!

Paws she is speyed and I cant think of anything we have changed.... the only thing that is different at the moment is my other half is working long hours at the moment so rarely see him - could she be missing him???

I feed her on Science plan dry biscuits but I guess wet food would be quite good! perhaps mix it up abit so then she isnt getting bored - What do you think??

The vet said it could be due to change of season but just keep an eye on her. I think he thinks I am over reacting but its just so out of character it made me worry!

Recently I was considering getting another dog at the beginning of next year so she has some company but after speaking to a few doggie people they said she shouldnt be getting bored as she has plenty of interaction and walks! ...argh!

  • I perhaps wouldnt change her food at the moment - in my experience wet food tends to make dogs poos a lot more runny, and any sidden change in diet can cause a runny tum.

As both the changes have related to her digestive system (being fussy with food and pooing on the bed) it could be that she has had something like a bit of a stomach bug - are her poos ok? Changing her diet could set her off again, so I would perhaps leave that for now...

Sometimes dogs tummies can be settled if they are given a little natural bio yoghurt mixed into their dinner!

I think what paws meant was, that if she gets the scraps off your plate after her dinner, she has learnt to wait for these rather than eat the dried food.

You could just feed her after you have had your dinner - and give her her dried food with the scraps mixed in - most dog will eat their dried food very happily if it has a little bit of meat/fish or veg stirred through it!

Some Staffies are senstive little souls and she may be missing your OH. Plus, what's she like with loud noises? the firework season may be affecting her too
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

    !

    When was she speyed?

A friend has a female dog that although not really incontinent has just never been right in the waterwork department since. I assume that this is not the problem but worth thinking about.
