Have you got quotes for insurance on a more powerful / sportier car? You may find the insurance is far too expensive, even though you can afford to buy the car.

As above, anything sportier will cost a fair bit on insurance. Corsa's are the weapon of choice around here.

Fiat Panda 1.3 Multijet Dynamic 5d group 2 insurance and in your price range.
12.6 seconds 0-60 time so a little quicker than what you have now. Good reliability record which you don't normally expect from Fiat.
Not a whole lot different from what you have now is it?

The best advice is dead boring, keep the cheap run around you have, keep the licence (learn to keep speed limits, I find it very hard) and insurance claim history clean and have patience for your 21st Birthday when you'll have the money to get and then run something more interesting.

Oh hang on, lets not be completely boring, why not take a little of that £4K and do this sort of thing every once in a while so long as you fulfil any minimum age requirements they might have:

£4000 won't really get you much (of a newer) car...

As others said, check out the insurance too...

If you want something sporty then you might have to forget the "newer" bit.

My advice, save up some more then look (or find something (IMO) better to spend your money on).

However if you really want it... could get a BMW Z3, Mazda MX5, Toyota Celica, Toyota MR2... have I gone too sporty?!?!? :D

Well £4,000 may cover the insurance for a year.

I should do an insurance price check on the sort of things you like and see if you can afford the vehicle and insurance to help you with your decision. With your age as a guide, I suspect you will be looking at a Ford Ka, Vauxhall Corsa, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Matiz or similar.

  • The way to learn how to drive properly is to start with a little underpowered thing anyway.

If you have no power then you have to learn to carry more speed through corners. Its easier to do this in a car with lower limits than one with higher limits.
You'll also learn about getting the most out of an engine, when is most efficient to change gear, how to change gear quickly and also about planning ahead to be in the best gear for the situation.

You'll also learn about mechanical sympathy when it starts making funny noises. (Although Pugs do this from the factory anyway.)
