Paypal problem

Hello, I purchased an item on ebay with paypal for £44.98 on 5th october, there was not enough cash in my paypal so it used the instant bank transfer, which usually resulted in the money leaving my bank account 3 working days later. On this occasion the money never left my bank account. I contacted paypal numerous times asking if everything was ok, they told me to wait 9 working days, so I did. On Friday the 16th I contacted paypal again informing them that the money had still not left my bank account, I also contacted my bank to see if any direct debits to paypal were refused, they told me they had nothing their end. Anyway I have decided to stop using ebay/paypal and decided to close my account, donating the remaining credit to charity. The account closed fine, and I again contacted paypal today to get confirmation that I do not owe them anything and they said that if I was able to close the account then indeed I did not have any payments outstanding. I have also cancelled the direct debit via my online banking.

So on to my question, if paypal somewhere down the line realize they never actually got the £44.98 from my instant bank transfer what will happen? I contacted them on at least 5 occasions before closing my account to ask why the money never left my bank account. Finally after closing my account I email them to confirm I owe them nothing, to which they replied I did not (saved the email from them too). If it came to it I would pay the £44.98 of course, but if they try to add on fee's or forward this on to bailiffs/collectors where do I stand?

Did you actually get the item? Sometimes with BT it can take 5 or 6 days. What i'm a little confused by also you say you want to close the account and you donate the remaining money to charity. If you pay for anything via paypal they take the funding from your paypal account initially (you can't stop this) and the remaining either BT or card. If you didn't have enough to pay for the item you bought why was there a balance left? You sure it wasn't just paid via Paypal.

If Paypal decide you owe them money they will chase you if they get agencies involved they will charge you appropriate fees. I'm not sure how an email would stand saying you owe nothing. I would want a proper letter with a signature on it.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

I had sold some items after the 5th of october when I bought the item. There was a few quid remaining in the paypal balance before I closed it. I recieved the item that I bought etc. but have never been charged for it. Granted it can take 5-6 days, but it's now 19th and I bought it on the 5th. I emailed paypal numerous times asking if they payment went through alright and should I pay them again, each time they said it looks fine etc. I will take them to court if they try to add any additional fee's as I have right from the very start been doing my best to find out if there is a problem and how to sort it specifically to avoid any fee's.

Here is a copy of the email they sent me yestarday:

I have never owed a penny in my life, and this has had me kinda worried as I know it hasn't left my bank account. Anyway after once again mailing them today and explaining again in detail, I get this reply:

    Dear ********,

Thank you for taking the time to contact PayPal with your concerns. I am
    happy to assist you further.

Upon checking your account I see that the payment on the 5th of October
2009 for £44.98 GBP has successfully completed. There is no need for you
    worry about owing us money.

It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing PayPal.

So is it now time for me to accept that I have had some "luck" and won't have to pay this £44.98? I have triple checked my statement and there is nothing on there for the amount.
  • You did'nt have a credit or debit card attached to the account did you?
Did you know you can get Viagra software now??? Yeah, it turns your floppy drive into a hard drive :D
  • Yeah, I had my debit card attached (which is also to the same bank account used for the instant bank transfer)
