Hi we are going away for a few days to visit family as they are vegetarian, we take our own meals with us. Normally this is costly as we arrive at family home and go shopping. This time we want to take homemade ready meals with us.(Also less cooking when we are there) I was thinking of getting those foil takeaway containers to store them in and make sheppard pie, spaghetti bolognaise, curry and fish pie. How long go you think these would keep in the fridge as i think they only have a small freezer.
Thanks:j0 -
I would freeze them at home straight after making and transport them down in a cool box, then as soon as I get there stick them in the fridge, they will then slowly defrost and i would eat them for 3/4 days with no worries, maybe 5 days if they were still a bit frozen on day 2 iyswim.

Remember to put the foil side of the lid downwards (like at the takeaway). I know it sounds obvious but a friend of mine made me some pasta bakes and put the lids the wrong way and all the paper came off and stuck to the cheesy sauce!
I'd second freezing everything, cool the food as quickly as you can (transfering to the trays will help) and get it it to the freezer as soon as they are cooled. The foil trays are excellent.0 -
I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks and, having moved jobs far too often recently(!), remember how tiring it can be in the first few weeks, particularly with winter drawing in.
I have a day off from my current job on Tuesday, and a free evening on Monday so would really like to do a big shop and then prepare and cook some meals which can be frozen and taken out in the morning to be put in the oven when I get home. I could also prepare things in advance which would need simple cooking when I got in.
So far I have on my list
Spag bol
Chilli
Shepherds Pie
Chicken w/ parma ham and mozzarella (prepared but frozen raw)
Risotto (rice, chicken, chorizo, onion, pepper etc chopped but frozen raw)
Pizza
Home Made Burgers
Beyond that I'm a bit stuck! Even if its just a case of getting all the chopping and fiddly bits done and then actually cook it on the day that would be a help (as in the case of the risotto).
Any ideas would be very much appreciated!
Thanks :AThere is no such thing as a free lunch. Its only free because you've paid for it.
Noone can have everything they want and the sooner you learn that the better.

Knock yourself up some great warming winter soups. Nice big bowl of soup and a chunk of bread's nice as an evening meal when you're in a hurry.0

Have you got a slow cooker?
Well worth investing in one and reading the thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=435700
