travel insurance for cruise

i need travel insurance for a cruise, and as yet, havent found it.

i've never bought travel insurance before and have no idea what im looking for. guidance in P&Os brouchure suggest £2m for medical and repatriation.

i found "gold stand" cover from direct travel insurance for £25 and i can get £14 cashback.

my dad thinks this is a scam and theres no way we'll get cruise travel insurance for less than about £60 and should expect to pay £70.

so where do i start? can someone talk me through it?

would like to get something purchased prior to the end of the month.

MSEr's - help!

It entirely depends on you !

If you are a healthy, fit 21 year old who has never had any medical treatment, it will cost £20. If you are a 65 year old with heart problems the insurance might cost more than the cruise !

Get some quotes. Tell the truth when you are answering the questions. AND the cheapest is NEVER the best.

If you dont have an EHIC card, get one now. (european health insurance card)
but dont confuse this with travel insurance - you still need it.

Shop around for travel insurance but i think youve already found a good deal
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    Hi

I'm sure you'll find very reasonably priced travel insurance if you search the internet, and tailor your needs to the levels of cover on offer.

I'd just like to issue a word of warning. Please make sure you are very clear which company is covering you and, perhaps most importantly, which assistance company is used.

If the name AXA or AXA Assistance Claims plc is mentioned anywhere, do not go near the insurance with a barge pole. They will take your money for sure, but if you are unfortunate enough to have to make a claim they will give you no end of trouble and it could end up costing you a lot more than the premium. There are many others on these boards who advise steering well clear of AXA. For the sake of your sanity, health and pocket, please take note of what has been said.

try thomas cook, they do a special cruise one that covers all your excursions as well as a standard one.

Cruising does require specialist insurance, but it's widely available and not expensive if you are healthy. A lot of companies specifically exclude cruising - getting a helicopter to a ship for a medical emergency isn't cheap!

Best way to start is to get the P&O policy from the brochure and find insurance which at least matches their cover and payouts .

If your cruise is expensive, or a long trip the one clause which can be difficult to beat is the cancellation cover. P&O cover the whole cost however much you pay, most other companies have a limit of a few thousand pounds.

We used LV and for a week in Europe for two adults and a child (one adult with a medical condition) the total cost was just £36 (P&O charge £44 for one adult). Their cover (apart from the cancellation clause, but it was adequate) was also better than P&O - medical was £5m.

    Thanks all.

me + 1 are both fit (ish), healthy - im 25, she will be 23 at time of cruise.
cruise is 2 weeks in the med.

i dont think the £25 from direct travel includes air ambulance or something :S

woudl like one that covers the trips too... never bought this before - but aye, the cheapest is not always the best!
