Why is my TV picture snowy?

We had analogue switched off in August. We have Freeview via DVD recorder and FreeSat from Sky. TV was fine last night watching on Sky. TV is fine today watching Sky. Freeview picture has been fine since the switchover and the updates were done successfully. The aerial was new earlier this year and we've had no problems with it.
Picture on Freeview is snowy in vertical lines approx 1/2" to 3/4" wide but at a slight angle, e.g. \ \ \ \ \ \ \. When I watch something that has been recorded from Freeview that also has the snowy lines although when recorded a few days ago the picture was fine, just the playback today is snowy.
I could understand Freeview pictures on current programmes being snowy if signal is not good at the moment, but can't understand why the picture on programmes recorded last week are snowy.
Any ideas?

Thanks both. Not sure what the problem was but it seems OK now. Will keep an eye on it and check connections if it happens again.0

Poor signal quality on freeview will give you a blocky picture or stuttering.
Snowy picture would mean poor connection between devices.
Have you rescanned recently? We have had to several times recently.0 -

Yes, about three times , last one earlier this month. I watched on Sky last night (always a better picture anyway) and didn't check connections last night but checked Freeview picture again before I went to bed and it was OK, so just a temporary problem for a few hours. I've checked it again this morning and it's still alright so a bit of a puzzle. If it happens again I'll know what to check so thanks everyone for your help.Cause its Winter? or your watching Tim Allens Santa Clause again
