Connection confusion

I've read through the wireless and internet connection threads and am still confused as to what i need.

I have a computer downstairs which is connected to Bt broadband, via a Bt Voyager 210 ADSL router.

I wanted net access on the upstairs computer via the cheapest possible way :money: (only will prob be using it upstairs for 3 months)

What equipment would i need as i am looking on the net and dont know where to start. I have checked the back of the router and the only spare slot is the ethernet port.

I also don't have any internet connections on my computer upstairs, up to now it had used an external dialup modem to connect to the internet.

Your help, is as always much appreciated.

The *cheapest* way would be to buy a long length of ethernet cable and run it upstairs. You can try to hide it under the carpet or if your good at DIY, run it up the outside of the house.

The *easiest* way is probably to buy yourself the Linksys kit from PCworld for £40 which will come with the router and a wireless modem for your upstairs computer. (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/209874)

You could then after 3 months flog the linksys kit on ebay and get most of your money back, especially if you keep the receipt & box.

    Thanks for the reply!!

I would be quite happy with a cable to be honest - my room upstairs is right near the staircase and it would avoid the problems with setting up a wireless network.

Would would such a ethernet cable be plugged into on the upstairs comp though - would a network card be necessary.... would it automatically sense the connection.... thanks in advance

If your PC hasn't got an Ethernet card, just plug in something like this and connect to the router using a suitable length of cable.
