You tell the benefit section the whole amount, then the transfer amount to you and then they will use the information accordingly to re- assess your claim/s“You’re only here for a short visit.

If mother is listed as a joint account holder, it will automatically transfer to her, otherwise the bank would need letters of administration.0

OK
I am not up on the inheritance laws fully so I think you need to get some legal advice at this point! But as your grandfather died intestate, it has to go through the courts first in case someone else decides they have a claim does it not.
If you both apply for that probate as next of kin does the amount not get split anyway - which would help your Mum as she would not be intentionally depriving herself of any assets and so although there would be a minor amount that would be reduced the majority of her benefits would stay the same.
If I were you I would not rush headlong into this one without gettting professional advice as you could end up paying things out that you dont need to! After all once the estate has been settled and the funeral fees, etc paid there may well be less than £6000 each.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -

a friend of mine was on benefits and got about £150k left to her from a relative, she did not tell the benefits office, took the money and spent it , that was 7 years ago, nobody found out and nothing was ever said, not that i would suggest you follow her actions :-)
and in answer to bryanb's "is benefit fraud ok nowerdays" question-go ask a politician, seems to be perfectly acceptable in there books to steal from others and get away with it!0 -
hmmm ok so she does have to tell them the whole amount? she can't just tell them after she transfers it? even though my grandad said he wanted us to have half each and it was always going to be that way?
and the bank don't want letters of adminstration - my mum is under 65 - it wasn't a joint account and they are happy to just transfer it all with the death certificate.
also there would be no other relatives who would wanna make a claim - and we will be paying out any "claims" anyway - eg electric etc.
with this new info - any ideas?

What goes around comes around one day.a friend of mine was on benefits and got about £150k left to her from a relative, she did not tell the benefits office, took the money and spent it , that was 7 years ago, nobody found out and nothing was ever said, not that i would suggest you follow her actions :-)

It is people like your friend who are probably the most undeserving of benefits and who tarnish the ones who really need benefits.
And I think you are as bad for not reporting it...:rolleyes:0
