Thanks for your advice dacouch. Its the first problem in a so far smooth buy. Do you think that prefabricated non combustible is the correct definition for the BISF?

    My structural surveyor doesnt know!!

How they have described it on the paper work does not matter really as often their software does not allow them to be any more specific. What really matters is that they are aware of it and have accepted it.

If you get them to confirm in writing or send the recorded delivery letter this would be sufficient should there be any queries in the future.
  • sorry to hijack nirey...did you sort this out in the end? i too am going through the motions of purchasing a BISF house, and not having a lot of luck (yet) with B&C insurance - who did you go with in the end?

Chances are that they might not reply to an old thread.

If you are living in south Wales, there are loads of these properties constucted in this way.

Suggest that you contact a local broker, who should have arranged cover for this type of property.

If you search online for 'non standard construction Buildings Insurance', you will find a number of companies. Towergate would be worth a try.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • cheers, gonna try towergate and halifax tomorrow. Also gonna find out who the vendor is currently insured with :)

hi there, i've posted a private response to you
  • Prefabricated non combustible is the correct property type for a BISF house.
This wording relates to the wall construction of the property. Which due to being part steel and part render is non-combustible.

I run a new BISF House website and some users have been having problems with Halifax insurance recently following their take over by Lloyds. Some users have recommended Kwik Fit Insurance / Churchill also sites such as comparethemarket will give you a result of 2-3 brokers who will insure BISF properties. Prices in the Midlands for buildings and contents came out at around £200 for both but I have had reports of companies asking for figures over £900 so be sure to shop around.

Good luck with your search and I hope this may help other owners also.
