Best meat to get?

I bought a big lump of brisket for £7.50 in Asda.
I got a pot roast out of it on Day 1
Cold slices for sandwiches for 2 packed lunches on Day 2
I cut off any fat and put the rest in a food processor and made mince.
I made the mince into a base for 2 X spaghetti bolognese and a chilli con carne. I put two batches in the freezer and we'll have spaghetti on Day 3.
I minced up the fatty bits in the food processor, mixed with some stock and a few cooked carrots - and that's a batch of cat-food that will last 5 days.
I hate brisket, and only buy it because of what I can do with the left overs.0 -
I use different meats but mince (only a good quality one Donald Russell online have 8lbs for £19 at the moment which for butchers meat rather than supermarket is cheap) makes lots of meals. I make mince and onions, spag bol, chilli, shepherds pie, meat and potatoe pie and keema curry. I get pork chops in the 3-4-£10 at supermarkets but they only tend to do a tea for three adults (may do two adults and two children). Turkey steaks are cheaper than chicken and could make lots of different meals but check out the rubber chicken thread. Co-op have half price chickens at the moment. I recently got a ham from Netto for about £3.20 that would do a meal for two and sandwiches or soup (or both) the day after.GC Jan £318/£350, Feb £221.84/£300, Mar £200.00/£250 Apr £201.05/£200 May £199.61/£200 June £17.25/£200

I would go for a variety of meats. If you're economising, I think the best are mince, whole chicken that can be stretched, pork shoulder, and cheaper cuts of beef (eg shin, skirt, brisket) and lamb (shoulder, very cheap in tesco at the moment and breast which is lovely stuffed and rolled). Don't forget offal...liver, lamb etc is very tasty and much cheaper than some other meats.
This thread should help with cheaper cuts:
cheaper cuts of meat
The other alternative is to buy better (more expensive) cuts of meat but eat less of it and substitute some of your meat meals during the week for veggie alternatives.

I always buy massive packs of skinless and boneless chicken thighs from Costco, then freeze them in smaller portions. IMO thighs are tastier than breast meat and can be bunged whole into the slowcooker with a sauce on a busy morning and still have a succulence that breasts lose in the s/c. They are also fine in stir frys etc and much cheaper.
Mince is always an very versatile, we have something with mince every week.0 -

I try to have at least one veggie meal & one fish meal per week.0 -
Probably not the cheapest but i went for tescos 3 for a tenner this week, mix and match. We got a smoked gammon joint, whole chicken and pork shoulder joint. The gammon feeds the five of us with some left over for sandwiches, the chicken does us all for a dinner, then some sandwiches then into stock and the pork shoulder joint will do us a meal i think, its quite small really. Will bulk it out with veggies.:starmod:Sealed Pot Challenge Member 1189:starmod:0

I'd also go for a large whole chicken - should get 2 to 3 meals from that one , we usually do a roast dinner, a chicken curry then a risotto with the legs.
Also I recenlty switched from beef to lamb mince as i think its more versatile and has a better flovour and seems to mix well with red lentils in to bulk it out for things like spag bol, sheppards pie , mousaka , meatballs with pasta etc. Ands my kids ( aged 3 and 1)like it better than beef mince as its easier to chew (probably because it has more fat, but i always drain it after cooking and before adding other things)Grocery Challenge Feb 14 £500 / Spent £572.10!
March 14 £500 / spent £488.45 :j0
