Laptop charger melted

I have an 11 month old Compaq laptop. A few weeks ago the charger developed a fault in that it would only work after much wiggling and then had to be held in place once a connection was found. Today it started smoking and melted, leaving the silver connector in the laptop socket.
It would seem that I can buy a new one for c£20-25 but I'm wondering if there is a chance that the original fault lies with the laptop and not the charger? Also, is there any chance that this and/or a replacement charger would be covered by warranty?
There is also a problem with the battery rapidly discharging if unplugged (about half an hour as opposed to the original 3) which happened very suddenly - is this normal? The laptop has never been left for more than a day or two without being used/charged.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor...

Sounds like a fault with the battery, so youd need to replace both:idea:0
