Not the coast but have you thought of going to Lake garda?

You can relax on a beach 1 day and be in the centre or Milan / Venice / Verona the next.

Lots of theme parks / water parks / restaurants / bars / other things to do

In Alghero the beach was definately fully open to the public. In Rimini lots of hotels had sections of the beach but it was towards the rear of the beach. Most of the hotels even the ones back from the sea front had their own section of beach or combined with a couple of other hotels.

Even if you stayed somewhere that didn't have its own bit of beach you could still use the beach at the front of the private areas as they only use the back of the beach plus there is a large public beach section at one end of the beach.

I've recently visited Salou as part of a holiday and it is no comparison to italy. Classy upmarket resort or blackpool in the sun with pints of carling and egg and chips.

I know which one i prefer.

I can't give you any exact recommendations except to back up the Sardinia suggestion.

I have been learning Italian for a few years and my Italian teacher tells me that when the Italians want a beach holiday, they go to Sardinia, not the mainland.

    (No, she's not from there)

You need to do a bit of research though, as some Italian beaches charge to go on them

If you want beaches in the Bay of Naples area Ischia is the best option. You do not have to pay either unless you want loungers and parasols.
