Confused by e-on direct debit

Up until September I was paying £75 per month for my electricity with e-on (gas is on a pre-payment meter) I have built up a credit of £90ish and for financial reasons had to cancel the dd so that Octobers payment did not go out (e-on were fine with this).

When I went online to reset the dd it defaulted to payment on 1st of the month and a monthly payment of £46, when I changed the payment date to 2nd of the month (which suits me better) the amount changed to £52??!!

I'm fine with this (in fact would be happier even paying a little bit more) but am confused as to why changing the payment date by one day changes the amount!?

    Hi Nikkisun :hello:

    Sorry about the confusion :o

Direct Debit accounts have a review date, changing the date of the payment will make your account think you have one less payment until this date, therefore increasing the amount.

This is to help accounts have a zero balance in the spring.

For example, if your review date is 1st April 2010 and you pay on the 2nd of each month, a payment for April 2010 will not be included, meaning the payments will be a bit more.

    Hope this helps.

I think the Eon 'super computer', work experience kid? Has had a malfunction recently. My Eon DD's were raised by 20 quid a month, then lowered the month later.

Question. Why cant I have total control of my own payments online? The ability to raise/lower DD payments as I see fit, I'm over 18, of sound mind, though the body isn't what it was. The ability to add and withdraw funds as necessary.

Thanks Helena - that makes sense. Works out better for me anyway cos I'm happier paying that little bit more.

    Hi jimexbox,

The Direct Debit shouldn't normally be messed about like that, it would happen if the account was re-billed or similar.

I completely agree with you about having complete control over your own DD online ;) the problem with this would be that a lot of people would not set the amount correctly, or they would refund credit that is due to go towards next bills, we get a lot of requests for this
