Audi A3 1.9TDiE or 2.0TDI Stronic??

Hi,

I currently drive an '09 reg Audi A3 Sportback 1.9TDI Manual (Sport level trim) as a company car. Due to a member of staff leaving I have been given the opportunity to take his company car,.. an '09 Audi A3 Sportback but 2.0 TDI S-Tronic auto (SE level trim)

The 1.9TDi I currently drive lacks any 'kick' and although it is still a nice car, i am tempted to take the offer of the 2.0TDI S-Tronic...

Does anyone have any opinions as to the above?? what would you do?

  • The 2.0 is a lot quicker, though i'm not a great fan of the DGS/S Tronic/CVT/multitronic !!!!!! boxes. Give me a normal auto anyday though!

    Thanks Harvebobbles,

I have also heard that the 2.0tdi is a lot quieter and smoother. I think the s-tronic has paddles on the steering wheel, so you can choose between fully auto and manual gear changes??
  • Leave it in Drive and let the car do it for you. The paddles are there for if you want to pretend to be Lewis Hamilton. Only better...

Wouldn't say the 2.0 was quieter or smoother to be honest.

    Swap it tomorrow! I've had 2 s-tronics A3s covering about 70,000 miles.

The 2.0 common rail is better and the s-tronic gearbox is a great match for the engine - no more having to worry about running out of power and having to change gear halfway through an overtake. Great in traffic too - no more aching left leg.

Paddles are very useful for twisty rural roads as the s-tronic doesn't change down quick enough, so you can be in the wrong gear for the corner.
  • I had a DSG A3 for a couple of days a year or so ago and really liked it..

The change from the 1.9 audi to the 2.0 engine alone would swing it for me... its a much better engine.
  • Is s tronic the new name for DSG? Audi autos! They've got bloody dual clutch, normal torque converters and cvt autos. I dont know which one's in what car now!

If it's the dual clutch, thats supposed to be quicker and more economical than a manual isn't it? Plus you get the better engine. I'd swap!

Yes, they have a dual clutch. OP, is this the 140BHP or 170BHP 2.0 TDI?
I've never driven a diesel car before, being a committed petrol man myself, but I test drove the 140BHP for a couple days 3 weeks ago, it went like the stink. It took off when I put my foot down at 60mph in 6th gear, and was far quieter that I expected. The only time I noticed the noise was at tickover when stationary, but it wasn't intrusive at all. The SE spec. is one trim level down than the SPORT, so you get 16 inch alloys instead of 17 inch, and you don't get the sport suspension.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"

And they will all last about 50,000 miles. Hence why I said give me a normal auto anyday.
  • Hopefully the 2.0l is a bit better than that unrefined 1.9l tractor engine?
Proper auto for me too in preference to those over-complicated gimmicky "auto" gearboxes of any make!

I didn't realise the dsg were unreliable. Shame, i'd always fancied one of those! Bit put off by the cvt autos so I gyess that leaves the torque converters!
