ESA medical

My husband is claiming ESA after a motorbike accident in March. I understand the procedures for this benefit but can anyone tell me why my husbnd has to go through this. He is self employed not unemployed and when his injuries have healed he will return to work. He does not need any help to get back into work or find work HE HAS A JOB. If his injuries had not been so serious he would be back at work continuing to pay his share into a system as he has done for the last 30 years.

  • to continue claiming esa he will have to have the medical....simples ;-)
  • Yes I already know that. My query is that everything is orientated to getting off ESA and BACK into work. My husband is incapable of walking at the moment so he is unable to work, he is recovering from an accident that left him with a fractured right hip and a chipped left pelvis, 6 fractures to his lower right leg including a compound fracture, extensive nerve, muscle and tissue damage to his right knee and ankle a fractured left wrist and thumb to list some of his injuries. He is not uenemployed and does not need help to find a job and according to all the information leaflets we received with the questionnaire that is what this is all about.

The system can't seem to cope with the concept that somebody may still have a job open for them to return to when they are better! I was in a similar position in that I had been off sick for long enough for SSP to run out so I had to claim ESA. After 13 weeks of ESA I had to go to the interviews and medical. At the time the interviews were pointless as my job was still open for me to return to. The people I saw were very nice and agreed it was as much a waste of their time as mine but could do nothing about it!

As it happened my condition did not improve so in the end I was moved into the Support Group where you don't have to attend interviews.

The purpose of the ESA medical, as with any other- including private medical insurance, is to see if the relevant conditions are still being met.
With the ESA medical, it is an assessment on what anyone can do having regard to the illness/disability claimed.
More info on the ESA medical test called WCA is here-

In that case he wont be judged as being fit for work atm

I too have a job but am claiming ESA as I've been off work for so long. The medical is fair enough, but I find all the pathways and "return to work" interviews such a waste of time. I don't need help with my CV or interview technique. I have a perfectly good job, which I love. I am just not up to working.
