Stage Curtains

I am on our village hall committee and we need to replace our stage curtains (about 72m of material - 4 curtains in all each 3.6m long made up of 5 widths).
Has anyone any experience of doing this kind of thing. What type of material is it best to use. Anyone know any good suppliers (I live in Burton on Trent).
Our present ones are Velvet but well past their sell by date.
I imagine that they need to be fireproofed.

Yeah, they will need to be fireproofed, I think you can get spray on stuff. I think they basically need to be good thick, lined curtains. They have to create a visual barrier, i.e. totally opaque. Also they should trap sound. I think this is why stage curtains are normally velvet. It's like stage doors being covered with baize. I suppose felt, fleece, flannel and towelling would also all deaden sound effectively but velvet looks better. I don't know too much about it myself but the people here will: www.amdram.co.uk
  • They will have to be flame retardant, both the fabric and the linings. This will also require a certificate from them company that you purchase. If you spray it on or dont get the certificate when the fire cheif comes around ( as i have heard of before, they can just put a match to it to see what happens) being a curtain fitter by trade i have heard of them doing this before. velvet is generally most commenaly used material as it is thick and has a tight weave, which helps for privacy. i am sure you can look online for suppliers of this type of material.

    Any other questions just ask.
