GE '3%' Cashback Card

  • I rang them up today about the cashback and got the following information. As has been said, the cashback will be credited to our September statement, and this will be what happens every 6 months from now on. The man agreed that it was initially put on the info that a cheque will be sent out every 6 months, but that has now changed. They were originally going to do the first cashback in November, but for some reason he didn't know they are doing the first one now via the above method, and this is how it will be done in future.

I also probed a bit about the 3% interest that most of us were having on all items. In particular the person who said that they could actually claim the money back if it was shown to be in error. What he actually said was, that while in theory that is true, if the cash back has actually been credited to the account they cannot take it back after that, it would only be in the interim period, and even then it is doubtful they would actually do so. It was also interesting that he seemed to think that say you bought some items at M & S, some items food, and some clothes, that the food only items would be recognised. I said that seemed strange as if you bought a tv from Tesco or other supermarket, it would automatically go down as food with it being from a grocery store. We agreed the only way would be to do it the old fashioned way by experimentation.

Just received my pin and will hopefully get the card in the next few days.
I've always used a debit card for my daily transactions so be easy on me if this is a stupid question.
If I use the card for my weekly shop....say £50.....and in the same transaction get cash.....say £30.....will this show up as 1 transaction or 2?..... will I get cash back on the entire £80 or just the £50?......will I get charged interest on the £30 straight away as its a cash withdrawl or will it be treated as a purchase?
    Thanks in advance

Don't think yu can get cashback on CC - but you can us them to get money from ATM - however DON'T !!! You get charged interest from the day you withdraw the money meaning any 3% savings are wiped out by this interest charge!! Use debit card to get money out and CC (with direct debit) to buy stuff.

I didn't get a statement in July from GE (I thought it was Aug, but that one has turned up) - I see a few people on this forum have contacted GE by e-mail - can anyone advise an address please?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi!

Does anyone know how this card works if you are buying petrol/diesel in Euros? I'm based in NI and go down to ROI to get diesel at more reasonable prices? I would guess that the exchange rate converts it back to £ and there shouldn't be any problems.

    Thanks

I am guessing that any cashback you might earn on doing that will be cancelled out by the foreign exchange fee + not that great conversion rate.

You would be much better getting a Nationwide credit card as that has no fees for foreign currency transactions.

GE certainly do not seem to be very up to date with their systems - I believe they are the only c/card provider who, to date, cannot provide internet access to your account. So no surprise, they are unable to amend anything once the account is set up.

GE can and do provide internet access to credit card accounts for some of the other credit cards they offer/run (i.e. Asda/Debenhams/Paypal etc) (edit: so I presume it will come in due course - probably later this year - for their "own" cards)

As for statement dates etc - I suspect that all GE cards (including other branded ones) have the same date - my brother has a Debenhams one and that also seems to be posted on the 17th of each month.

Re: the long time it takes statements to arrive - I think that may be partly down to the volume of statements they send out and the fact that don't use Royal Mail all the way. In fact, just as some people don't like using companies which use foreign call centres I am (only half jokingly) tempted to avoid firms who don't use the Royal Mail - unless they offer a very good deal for their customers as per the GE Moneyback card.

I haven't seen it mentioned here (may have missed it) but with the July statements GE Money updated their T&C.

Part of this was just saying that their charges for missed/bounced payments and exceeding credit limits was being reduced to £12 and that cash advances were subject to a fee of 2.5% (minimum £2.50)

However, they also updated paragraph 7 to provide 'additional clarity' in relation to when they pay cashback amounts :
    7.Cashback
7.1.We may pay Cash Back at a percentage we set from time to time on the value of all Retail Purchases. If we do so, we will show the Cash Back you earn each month in your statement and will pay the total value of Cash Back you have earned twice a year. We will not pay Cash Back if the total amount of Cash Back is less than £5.
7.2.If you miss your monthly payment; or either of us have given notice to end this agreement; or you exceed your credit limit in any month; or you have seriously breached any of the terms and conditions of the account you may not earn cash rewards for that month and your six-monthly credit may be with held. Prior to any loss of six-monthly credit, we will notify you on your statement and give you 14 days to bring your account back into good standing.
7.3.If you are given a refund for a Retail Purchase on which we paid a Cash Back we will deduct the Cash Back we gave you for that refunded Transaction.
7.4 We may vary the Cash Back percentage by giving you not less than 30 days’ notice.

    Regards
    Sunil

I applied online and was then asked to send in proof of address. Is this a good sign?
