faulty fitted wardrobes

Hi, this is my first time on the forum and I am looking for some advice.
I had some fitted bedroom wardrobes put in four and a half years ago. Now all the wood is lifting off the front of the doors. I contacted the shop that put them in and they acknowledge this has been a common problem due to some faulty adhesive. The manufacuring company that produced the doors will replace them free if it is less than 4 years but because I am over this, it will cost me £400 to put right. (original bill was £2000).
I would have expected fitted furniture to last longer than this.
I just feel that because they knew this was a common problem the retailer should have contacted me, earlier - we have had other work done recently and nothing was said.
Hope someone can help.
