Old Debt

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows an answer to my problem.
I have just been contacted by a collection agency for a credit card debt for a card I had in 1995-1999. I completly forgot about this considering it was so long ago. They contacted me today to pay it back. I had even paid for a credit report from some of the top agencies just before I got my mortgage a year ago and it wasnt mentioned in there at all.
I was under the impression that after 5 years they wiped it clean? Is this correct or not? Basically where do I stand legally?

If you haven't acknowledged this debt in writing or made a payment for 6 years (5 years in Scotland), then the debt is statute barred and the DCAs will not be able to collect.

Yes lookup statue barred on here and you will find info about it. Do not ever acknowledge the debt though espically in writing.
