What would mark a granite worktop?

Okay, I know this is doing the hints and tips in reverse, but does anybody know what marks granite worktops? Looking for something that would take that nice shiny polished effect off - something in everyday use, not taking an angle grinder to it!

I've had mine over a year and nothing has marked it .
I still use chopping boards but not trivits for hot dishes.
It shows spills and smears but polishes up very well and looks like new.
I was tempted to climb on it once to reach a window but OH said it could crack and break - which would be pretty disastrous!0 -
Much use you are ...;-)0

Try posting on 'In My Home' board as I think it is Alan M posts there alot and he has a granite/stone business he may be able to help you. I am wondering why you would want to take the shine away though...?Life is a work in progress0

When they fitted my granite tops they gave me a cleaning kit and in that was a bottle of stone cleaner which you leave on a few minutes and then wash away with clean water before polishing up again.
The stone cleaner can be put on in any strength you need it,I dilute mine and it still takes the shine off so if you put it on undiluted I guess you'd get realy dull granite.
Just wondering why do you want to get rid of the shine.0 -
Thanks all. I don't really want to take the shine off, not in real life anyway, it's for a story about a woman with an immaculate kitchen who nearly has a breakdown when the worktop gets marked ...0

I hope you get the stonemason back out to grind out the mark and repolish it at the end of your story, just because if mine got marked I'd do this.0 -
I might get the stonemason out ... but not to re-polish the worktop ...0

Acid?
I work for a company that deals with marble and granite worktops, and we advise people not to leave acidic liquids (lemons, tomatoes) on the surface. It's worse with marble. Perhaps your lady would like a marble worktop? Much more susceptible to damageMy TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0
