Water ingress and re-upholstering...
Hey guys, my Mk4 Golf seems to be letting water into the passenger footwell whenever it rains (rules out the heater matrix, thank god). I've lost count of the number of times this has happened. When it rains heavily, there is literally stagnant water ontop of the carpet, so there's lots!
I've looked at the door seals and had my mechanic look at the pollen filter. I have no sun roof so I am at a loss as to where the water could be coming in from. All I know is the bit under the glove compartment is where the water comes through on the inside.
Could my windscreen seal be compromised? Has this happened to anyone else?
I may call Autoglass, but I wanted a bit of feedback incase I missed anything.
The other thing I wanted to enquire about was reupholstering the carpet. Water has come in so often (I just lay newspaper down now in anticipation to soak up excess water), that I am worried there may either be water damage underneath the carpet or possibly some mould or mildew brewing. I have purchased damp traps and leave them in the car after it has stopped raining and I have cleared most of the water out, but I fear this is not enough,
Once I have resolved the flooding problem, would any know how much it would cost to just reupholster the carpet on the passenger side (and does anyone know anyone trust worthy in or in proximity to London)? My car is nearly 9 years old so I don't want to spend too much on it, as I have already spent over 2 and a half grand on various work and reconditioned engines...

My friends Mondeo had a similar fault.
The Windscreen had been fitted trapping the wire connecting the heated screen element.
This prevented the windscreen seal functioning properly.
In his case, the water ended up inside a fuse panel behind the glove box.
Cost him about £300 to refit/reseal the windscreen, remove/clean/replace the fuse panel, and to sort out a few burnt wires.0 -
A Vauxhall problem was where the water goes when it runs down the windscreen. (in where the window wiper motor and assembly is)
The drain holes used to block, filling up something with water (the bulkhead? or A posts? cant remember). This eventually used to run over and come into the footwell.
There was rubber gromits on the vauxhalls that could be removed to let the water out underneath the car.
Ok it's not a vauxhall, but you never know.0 -
breakers yard or ebay for the carpet
not hard to fit tbh
as for the leak check around the pollen filter housingSealed pot challenger # 10

It's funny that, because the interior lights have been playing up. Sometimes when I switch them on, a sign on the dashboard indicating that a door or boot is open goes on instead. :rotfl:
Thanks the info guys

you need to seal around the pollen filter housing. Passats are the worse ones.0 -
My old Leon (Mk I) had a similar problem- eventually traced it to the passenger rear door seal. Because of the way the floor pan was shaped (guess it would be the same for a MKIV golf) the footwell got soaked. Cost about £100 to get fixed.0
