Different credit cards from MBNA

I used an MBNA credit card to transfer the balance from a RBS card in July 2008. I was not aware of this site and didn't know about the "never spend on a balance transfer card". In fact, I was so dumb, I wrote out cheques for around £20 without realising there was a £3 per cheque fee. I'm not a bit more knowledgeable but still pretty dim in other regards.

For instance the MBNA card was from the British Heart Foundation. The last transaction on it was in May 2009 - strangely I still have 7p credit on it. I have around £4000 on an RBS card. I've seen an offer on a British Telecom bill for a card (from MBNA). Would it be stating the obvious to say they won't give me a BT card because I already have a card (BHF) with them?

If this is the case how do I go about closing the British Heart Foundation card. How long would I have to wait before applying for the British Telecom card?

This probably won't even matter as I see in these articles you have to have an income of £20,000 plus anyway - I don't.

  • I believe MBNA will allow more than one card per customer, particularly if they are issued via different brand partners like BHF and BT. But they might reduce your existing BHF credit limit instead of giving an increase in the total amount of credit available.

Closing a card is easy when there's no balance owing. The T&C may say you should cut the card in half and send it back to them with a covering letter, which works fine, but in practice a phone call should be enough and is probably safer than posting the card back. Ask for a letter confirming the account is closed.

Sorry I don't know about the qualifying criteria for a BT card.

It doesn't seem to worry MBNA how many of their cards you have, providing you fit their nomal lending criteria.

DH and I have 5 between us from them (we are card tarts!) and it's never affected the credit limits of any of them.

We have a BT card, and the only thing we found with it was that, once the initial offer was over, the APR was quite high on it.

So, we do make sure we clear it every month.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)
