Vanquis Card - didn't work 1st time i used it!

I recently got a Vanquis Card, went to use it for the first time today and it didn't work, it wasn't authorised, tried it in another shop - the same! I was so embarrassed. Rang Vanquis when i got home and they said the first shop had a faulty card machine which had caused my card to be blocked hence why it didn't work in the second shop - sounds a bit iffy to me - has anyone else had this happen?
A home is not a home ..... without a dog
