Not sure what to say really, My mind isnt quite up to functioning properly.
My Hubby received a letter stating that they no longer require his department at the branch he's at. They have arranged a meeting for 26th Oct to say who will go. Well Hubs is the only one who works in his department so its kind of obvious LOL
He has worked there for 26 yrs in January.
I am a bit of mess to be honest as i am the one who deals with the finances and has to try and make ends meet.
All in know is that he will get redundancy payment of 1 weeks pay for capped at 12 years
anyone got any more advice for us?? Thankyou in advance

might be a good place to start.
I'm sorry you and your husband are facing this. 26 years is a long time. The board is quiet but I'm sure you'll get some useful, positive replies soon.
Your husband might want to consider signing on (check the directgov link and jobcentreplus) as unemployed so that National Insurance contributions are kept up (govt. pays). It's not a morale booster but may be useful for now and help with future applications for support (e.g. housing benefit/mortgage help) if you need it.
Best wishes.Thank you to all who contribute to all of this super site:smileyhea !

Hi and thankyou
Have had a look at that site and it seems its 20 years the Redundancy pay is capped at not 12 years.
Im not sure about all the signing on stuff. Will he be able to even though he will have redundancy pay which will last roughly 7 months. Also i dont work, so would i have to claim IS instead of the child tax and Working tax. It all seems such a palaver.
Thankyou for any help xx0 -
If you have savings over £16k that automatically means you won't receive monies. However, you say your husband will get it...take it he hasn't got it now? You're right, it's a palaver which can often feel that it's not worth the effort for the amount they'll offer.
They will assess each case individually and as you have a family I don't know about those benefits so basically please seek advice from directgov.uk. You've already found out that pay should be capped at 20 not 12 and that's important so I'm sure there may be other issues that might need clarification. It's a minefield.
http://www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk/ might help as might http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/redundancy .Thank you to all who contribute to all of this super site:smileyhea !

Don't forget also that if he is over 41 he will get one & half weeks for every year he is over 41 not just one weeks pay. It is capped at 20 years but a max of 30 weeks pay not 20 weeks.0

Check about NI contibutions too! It may be he can't claim actual money but may be able to get his contributions counted if he signs. It is my experience that they will not OFFER any info but may answer a direct question!0

My husband was made redundant a few years ago after a long time and he was really convinced that despite his track record in work (excellent and only ever had 3 jobs never out of work) his age would count against him and he wouldnt find work. If you are determined, you will. There are opportunities out there, I know it is harder now but look outside the box and consider other jobs. He took a job at a factory packing and it was night shifts but it got us thro and now has a super job. I am not sure whether they still do it but the Jobcentre dont tend to broadcast it much but if you get an interview and you tell them about it before you go, they should input the details of the system and you can then claim back mileage expenses, it was called Travel to Interview (TIS), it really helps. best of luck and dont forget the website Entitledto may give you some ideas

he May be entitiled to contributions paid jobseekers allowance if not income based. it is the same amount as JSA but her will only receive it for 6 months. There is no harm in him asking at jobcentre.0 -
Thankyou so much for all your advice, it really is appreciated. He is over 41 (he's 43) ive done one of those calculator things and we are hoping to receive about £7229. We have 3 children 10,6 and 1 so were hoping we should still get child tax credits.
To be honest, thinking outside of the box for a minute, this might be the shove we both need! I am desperate to go to work but never had the guts due to childcare amount. So we are both currently looking so that at least one of us has a job!
He has an excellent track record at work, except last week he had 3 days off sick due to an injury to his foot, and doctor at the hospital said he had to have at least a week (he took 3 days)
I just hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, which i am sure there will be, just doesnt seem like it at the minute.
Thankyou again :beer:0 -
I hope things work out for you. To be honest reading this thread makes me sick with worry. The company my hubby works for has been struggling financially and he has been paid erratically for the past few months, but this month he wasn't paid at all. We are deeply in debt and I don't know how we will survive next month if he isn't paid again.
There has been no mention yet of redundancies and my hubby is such an optimist he is sure things will pick up and he won't go out and look for another job until he is out on the street.
I work, but my salary only covers a third of our monthly expenses. I don't know what to do. We have two kids, mortgage, debts etc. We are both so stressed out it is putting a strain on our relationship.
Can anyone offer advise about getting extra work, taking a payment holiday, or any other way we can weather this storm?
Thanks0
