Explorer file menu missing

Help! My Windows explorer file menu has stopped working. If I click on it, it freezes the machine and I have to ctrl-alt-del to get it back. The other drop down menus work ok, but not File. I've tried copying a fresh copy of Win Explorer and it does the same thing. As far as I can tell there are no viruses or other nasties -I did a full scan, with zero result.
I'm guessing it could be due to some other software corrupting it, and I have unistalled all recently installed programs, but to no effect.
Any ideas how to get it back working again?

Hi,
As long as you've got your windows (Xp?) cd go to start>run and type sfc /scannow to see if the system files are corrupted or not.
Also try right-cliing the My Computer icon>Advanced>Performance and click on Adjust for best performance.0
