How do I get out of this?

Not sure if I am in the right forum or not.
I booked a B&B at the end of September, intending to stay next Tues (20th Oct). Within the confirmation was a 14 day cancellation requirement. Unfortunately, I had to cancel on Sunday (11th October) due to Family reasons and I am not able to go to Edinburgh at all.

I was advised that if they fail to find someone to take my room, I will be charged the full room rate of £110. I have had to also cancel all the other hotels for the holiday and they have been no problem due to it being no more than 7 days cancellation period.

I cannot afford to take the hit as I have to buy a flight to go and see my sick sister in Ireland. Do I have any rights to insist they don't take payment or any ways to ensure I don't get charged?

It's a long shot I know but if I can save £110 for not even staying in the room I would be appreciative.

I would try to appeal to their sense of humanity and explain the situation ina grown up manner. If they are anywhere half decent, they should be OK with it. Otherwise, perhaps you could agree on a compromise of 30% of room rate for any nights where they couldn't get someone else in?
  • I agree. Just explain the situation and offer a compromise payment. Unfortunately if they've stated 14 days cancellation you can't really get out of it. You do just have to hope that they will be considerate.

Sadly you signed the terms and conditions so you have no choice. Does your credit card not offer any kind of travel insurance of some kind as I know some do? Thats your only choice. Unless you cancel the card but I am not sure thats strictly legal!
