  • Toothsmith,

That was over two 45 min appointments- first one was impression, grind off stump,x ray and start of the endo work, the last appointment was all endo work (and a bit of a !!!!!! too finding the third root canal). No dam was used! but I did leave her with quite a few bent canal files. LOL

Sorry, toothsmith, getting a bit defensive again! I just assumed that the amounts of time you mentioned were used but I can see now it wasnt so I'll agree with you! I would also take three appointments minimum to get to that stage

A bit better than I thought then!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I am registered with an NHS dentist. I've just been advised to have an upper tooth crowned. It will need two appointments.

I've had a look at the web site that Toothsmith kindly provided a link for here but the prices are quite a bit lower than the £100 I've been quoted. Would Toothsmith or Teerah confirm that the price is about right please?

    Kind Regards

If the tooth needs a bit of building up first, then that could be £10-£15 on top of the £80 crown charge, or is it just the cost of a check up & clean on top of the crown fee?

That would be a top up fee for a bit of building up, cementing and scaffolding works etc.

Many thanks for your response to my question. I'll start saving now.:p

Hi Nile, the current patient charge for a porcelain bonded to precious metal (i.e. tooth-coloured) crown is £92.28. Then there would be an x-ray as well which costs £2.88. There is an additional charge of £5.76 if this is the first or only crown in the same arch. I dont know if this is what is happening in your case but if you are having a tooth-coloured crown made for your tooth and you have no other crowns on any other top teeth then that could add up to a total of £100.92

3 years ago my NHS dentist charged me £200 for a white crown, but that was all in, no other charges. It took 2 45min appoimtments. I previously had a root canal filling done on the same tooth. So now a I have a great looking tooth and NO pain!! My root canal filling took ages and ages to do, and yes I broke loads and loads of raspy filey thingys. But my crown is the best thing ever.

By the way my dentist gave the option of a NHS crown a Gold Crown and a white crown. The best thing about the white cown is they match to the colour of your other teeth.

    Best of luck.

The maximum cost of a course of NHS dental treatment is £360ish (I don't know exactly, I've not done it for so long). Some treatments listed on the site show a fee greater than that, yet it still claims they are NHS!

I have 5 crowns. I was dreading the cost of replacing them when they actually need replacing because of the cost. Does that mean, if i have all of them replaced at the same time it will cost me maximum £360 on the NHS?

I am pretty fortunate, my dentist is still taking on new NHS patients.
