Questions about Dental crowns

I'd ring as other posters have said. Just to put your mind at rest until then, i had a temporary crown recently and the desntist said to me....if it falls off, as some temporary crowns do, don't worry unless it is hurting you.
Hope this helps0 -
Hello,
Is there anyone out there who would know how much i should expect to pay for a rear tooth crown, i've been quoted £405 today but wonder if its worth a second opinion or if this is the general cost. I cannot go NHS so this would be private anyway, i just don't know how much to expect to pay?
Any help would be greatly appreciated"He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money." Benjamin Franklin0 -
I had a molar crowned in 2002 and it cost me £250 - it was a white one....as a NHS patient I had the option of an NHS grey one, but opted to go privately.
To me the price you've been quoted sounds about what I'd expect, but I guess someone with a bit more knowledge will be along in a minute...

This sounds about right to me. It's slightly more than I charge, but you might well be in a higher cost area than me.
If this is a price set by a dentist who you've been seeing for ages, and like and trust, I wouldn't really bother shopping around, as if you went elsewhere it would pretty well pi$$ off your original dentist, and he may not then wish to continue treating you afterwards.
It may be possible to get it a few quid cheaper by shopping around, but then you'd be having to pay examination charges at each place you go for another opinion, and that's likely to cost ou more than you'd save. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
The thing is this is a new dentist, what happened was - sorry possible long story here, my dentist had been my orthodontist from the age of nine, i had a lot of problems with my teeth. After 8 years of braces, fixed, removable and one with a plate and false tooth attached i was ready to have a maryland bridge fitted.
Anyway my NHS dentist at the time fitted it (big mistake but i was 18 and didnt know any better back then) - my bridge is the tooth next to my front right tooth, instead of shaving a small portion at the top off he filed down the complete back half of the front tooth so is now 1/3 of its original thickness. The orthodontist started seeing me as a private patient shortly afterwards as the bridge didnt last very long so he built me a new one and i then had him as my dentist fiull time. Anyway, his surgery is now a practise where they specialise in cosmetic dentistry and he doesnt see patients day to day anymore. It is 1 1/2 trip from my house but in the past always thought it was worth it because i trusted him and its hard to find a good dentist after having such a bad experience. The last 3 times i have been there i have been seen by three different dentists who do not know my background and i've not felt comfortable with them so the other day when my tooth cracked off - It is a tooth that is dead so very brittle, i've had root canal in it before so understand it is likely to break - i found a local dentist for an emergency appt and he filled it with amalgm(sp?)
On Monday night this snapped off, so i went back today to this new one and this is what he's suggested. I don't know of his work but he seems to put me at ease quite well, not like the 3 at the old surgery, so i thougth i'd just check if the pricing seemed fair? Because of the amalgm falling out he said he wont charge me for the consultation as that was £77 alone last week. So i think i may stay with this one. If you all think its a reasonable price then I am happy with that. After all we use our teeth every day don't we, just hope it will last a while!! This tooth has caused me nothing but trouble!! Probably the most expensive one in my mouth!!"He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money." Benjamin Franklin0 -
