Just found another site which shows if the chestnut is edible by it's pod.

  • It's that time of year again folks!

Going to put some sweet chestnuts I collected yesterday in my brownies instead of walnuts to see how they turn out.

The prickly outer casings from sweet chestnuts are brilliant for cradling gently in cupped hands, and telling your kids that you've found a baby hedgehog :rotfl::rotfl:
  • That's the Horse Chestnuts!!!!! For playing conkers with:D

Sweet chstnuts an be eaten raw, boiled, roasted made into a puree for use in recipes:D

Horse Chestnuts also contain a natural soap - that is the shiny yellow tinge to the actual nut. In wartime these have been collected in order to do the family washing.

There is also soap in the leaves:

    Thanks.

Sweet chestnuts have reached their peak and they are delicious this year. If you don't have your own preferred cooking method, try cutting a slit in the top and steaming them for 10 mins, then turn off the heat. Take out a few at a time to peel, leaving the rest in the steam to keep the skins supple until you're ready.
