Please do not take them ALL from any area as the squirrels rely on them this time of year.
How they pick them up and open them with all those prickles amazes me!!!

Don't worry about the squirrels - they get a lot of them before they fall off the tree! And if you get hit by one that is half eaten, that is mr squirrel getting his own back! There is no way we can collect enough to starve the squirrels

Miserable people near me felled my two trees. They were on a public pavement and produced loads of lovely nuts. But because people started collecting them, they lopped them down

Our fruit and veg trader at the local market usually sticks a couple of pounds of chesnuts in for free around winter time... s'pose we have been going to him every week for the past 10 years though, lol!

I thought the same as you took the kids up the woods to find conkers and found thousands of what i know know to be sweet chestnuts :rotfl: need to go back at the weekend and collect some and try the soup.

Just all be very careful what you eat (apart from rach who sounds like he/she knows what he/she is doing) don't try any mushrooms or funghi and don't eat any conkers by mistake !!!!!!!!

p.s They charge a fortune for chestnuts where we are and canned or pureed ones in supermarkets are extortinate - happy gathering one and all !!!!!

Don't forget you can use them in your stuffing or baked with Christmas din dins.

we found some chesnuts at the weekend....they smell lovely when they are cooking...the spines are a pain thiough
