After being declared BR and having your OR interview, how long does it take for an IPA to be set up?

Have you had confirmation of an IPA ?

first of all the OR has to wait to give you any chance to query the figures....time it starts? can vary from place to place really depends how quick the office deals with it really

Hi and thanks for the quick reply. May have jumped the gun a bit as we do not go BR until late Nov, but as we will have some cash left over after paying for essentials etc. I was just curious to how long an IPA would take to set up.

  • Took about 3 months from the date of the BR to the first ipa payment for me.

Thanks for that, could I just ask what happens to the "surplus" cash for those 3 months whilst the IPA is set up?

IF you have a surplus over £99 a month after your household expenses are paid then until the IPA is set up its yours

UNLESS its a NT (nil tax code) IPA then you just put the cash to one side till they contact you

are you pretty certain of an IPA?

  • It comes in very handy for things that you might not be able to buy for a while, things like winter coats, shoes, car repairs etc..

Yes I am reasonably certain we will get an IPA. What is a Nil Tax code IPA please.

My DH will get a nil tax code. I'm no expert but I think it's when you're working the tax gets paid into your own account but you have to pay that to someother company, sorry it's not much info but at least you get an idea till someone else tells you correctly :)
  • you may get a "nil tax code" which means your tax doesn't get taken from your wage packet, you have to pay this to the OR, you must not spend this extra money. You can keep your surplus before an IPA but you cannot keep the tax, it may take a while but they will ask for it eventually.
