Hi churchrat, I read your post with interest as I am experiencing similar problems with my Westie.

He dislikes other dogs, he chases bikes and joggers and hates children. He also barks at the trains going past the house, and goes absolutely bonkers when the glass recycle lorry empties the bottles into the truck. He occasionally snaps at us and is generally an all round grumpy 9 year old. He has his tender moments and his daft moments so he is not completely grumpy all of the time and I love him to bits.

I've also considered some kind of behaviour therapy for him (or is it too late, given his age?) and we try to incorporate some of the Fennell methods into our daily routine; when I come home from work I speak to the family, get my coat and shoes off, get changed etc etc, then after about 10 minutes I acknowledge the presence of the dog and greet him and pat him.

Personally I couldn't ignore him for a full week - it does seem a bit extreme but I'm no expert.

I couldn't not walk him, we don't have a garden, so we have to take him out for a walk which inevitably means bumping into other dogs and seeing bikes etc.

Please do keep us informed and I'll hang around and see how you get on.

That came across as a tad patronising, although I'm sure you didn't mean it that way.
I know that I've got it right--she wrote it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I certainly didn't mean to be patronising - it's just that you said "when she explained it , it all made sense!!! I've forgotten it now!!!!"

My dog was a handful, untill I took her to the local RSPCA who run the Kennel Club Good Citizen courses, she has now got her bronze. We both enjoyed the classes, I still have to keep correcting her and re-inforcing what she has learnt. She is a rhodesian ridgeback x staffie so I'm glad that I took her to the classes because she hasn't got a nasty bone in her body, loves people and other dogs, infact she has got a fan club locally and I've met up with people with nervous dogs and we've walked around the field together and its helped her dog get over its fear of big dogs, another friend to add to Juno's growing list
