we're just in process of buying a new one as we're finding with a Focus once we put pram in boot the space is limited if we go shopping or away for a weekend, currently looking at a Vauxhall Meriva, seems quite roomy yet is still smaller in 'footprint' than a Focus etc. Plus with various deals on offer from them like £2.5k put towards a deposit(plus depending where you work or who you know they seem to have an 'associate' scheme with quite a lot of companies which means even bigger discount as you get them at the Vauxhall Employee price). I went from looking at 1 or 2 year old used Merivas for £9-10k to a brand new one with 3 years warranty for only £8.5k, even if depreciation is worse than others the lower initial cost makes it still extremely moneysaving!

Take your push chair with you when looking at cars is great advice! You'll be amazed how small the boot is on most hatchbacks once you've forced a push chair in!

If you want something a bit sporty that doesn't break the bank SEAT are well worth a look. We got a second hand Seat Cordoba (Ibiza with a MASSIVE boot) when kids arrived.
Ours is getting on a bit now but it's cheap, not too big, 100% reliable, very fast and there's room in the boot for 2 push chairs, travel cot, suitcase, bags of food, bedding...

    Thanks for the advice.

I have a few ideas, ranging from practical to fairly impractical.

I like the look of the Mazda RX-8. Not sure about boot space, but those "suicide" doors looks like it makes it more practical for loading a child. (probably fairly impractical).

Subaru Impreza Turbo. 4 door saloon - just practical. 5 door "hatch" - more practical.

I had thought about Seat, and will probably investigate further.

Major problem at the moment is working out a budget.

As soon as baby arrives you want a nice BIG car for room and safety - getting baby up and away from the road and the other mad drivers. My Grand Cherokee works for me! Highly recommended!
