Advice please on kitchen flooring

We are about to have a new kitchen installed (well Lord Eand a friend are doing it) and I am still undecided on the type of flooring I would like ,together with colour . Any suggestions would be gratefully received .

My final decision on wall units are from IKEA , Adel style in birch. It is a very light coloured wood , which is good as my kitchen needs more light .

What ever is suggested needs to be practical , 2 kids and a dog , and low maintenance.

I also need suggestions for wall tile colours.

Dont want much do I ???????????????

Thanks in advance

I'm currently umming and aaahing over the exact same thing!

I've heard marmoleum is good if you've got dogs (and kids too presumably!) as it's v. hygenic, easy to keep clean along with being quiet and warm underfoot. I do like the look of tiles though.
Our kitchen when we get it will be one with cream units and probably a wood worktop, so I'm thinking dark cream or terracotta-ey coloured tiles. Not sure if marmoleum comes in a tile 'style' yet as I've not properly investigated it yet.
Think it's supposed to be the idea that you contrast your floor with your units/worktop...

Not much help am I ;o)
  • We got tile effect laminate from homebase. It is really practical, easy to clean and goes really well with our light units. It is in a dark grey colour. It doesnt look like laminate it really looks just like tiles. We got wall tiles in the same colour and they look great. We were worried it would be dark but with under cabinet lights it looks great.

We had tiles, and I have a really good recommendation for a tile supplier just off the North Circular if you are in London! I still love them, 5 years after installation - and they are so tuff that when I dropped a Le Creuset cast iron pan, the tiles didn't break - the pan did!!!!!!!!

What area is being covered (in square metres or sq/ft) and what is your budget?

Recently laid a tile effect laminate floor in a kitchen with light doors. It was from Topps Tiles and was a black slate effect.Looked really good with similar worktops.

Id go for a dark coloured floor for contrast with the units, and because it wont show the dirt.

I like slate, but instead of having the real thing you can get very attractive slate effect laminate flooring or vinyl. personally I prefer vinyl as it is warmer underfoot than laminate and more forgiving of spills and dropped plates etc.

Mine didn,t and it landed on a corner and took out 4 tiles  - That being said I would still have tiles again - Dead easy to just get the mop out and swab the decks, I have tiled skirting too so the kitchen is a bit like a 3" deep swimming pool.

Lord E has the measurements and will post details asap .

Budget = not too expensive , i.e total job less than £400 or is that too tight/much ? It is not a large area approx 17ft by 6ft (guesstimate girly -so probably way out)

The difference obviously is that at the time I dropped the pan I thought the whole floor was going to have to be dug up (_pale_ structural problems, don't ask), so I'd have rather the floor gave way...

I have just moved into my new home and we have Karndean Flooring. We have oak units and dark worktops, with differnt shades of cream tiles on the walls.

We got a dark colur even though it is just the two of us - we can make such a mess and I did not want to be mopping constantly!

The floor is easy to clean and maintain, I am really impressed. It not noisy and is warm underfoot

Its not the cheapest of flooring but it looks good and is practical.
