Cheap (but not naff) furniture??

HELP!!! Please! My wife and I have just bought our first property and we don't have much cash left over, we were wondering if anyone knew of anywhere to get decent furniture at a good price? Would really help us if anyone's got any good ideas!
Thanks.

    Yeah, www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk

I ordered a coffee table and TV cabinet from them a few months ago, nice quality and a very good price. Although the coffee table table was damaged! I was not happy, rang the number provided and the dropped off a replacement and picked the damaged one up around 10 days later.

As always pay for goods via a credit card as the provider is jointly liable if the you have problems with your order.
  • We have furniture from all lots of places but have been inpresses most with IKEA s range. They build well if you take your time and have been great for us. Also like the fact you can go back a few years later and pick up other pieces that still match as they often do the same colours but maybe change their style.

If you're not fussy about second-hand, look on auction websites. I've just sold a whole load of furniture on eBay. Someone got an IKEA coffee table for 99p!

Yes eBay can be good for second-hand furniture especially the larger pieces, try looking for furniture that is pickup only and you can search for items local to your area.

Don't forget British Heart Foundation furniture shops. They sometimes have a good selection of stuff in, pretty cheap, and they may do a deal and give you a good delivery rate if you buy a joblot off them (and the money goes to charity so it's all good)

  • Thanks guys.

Sounds interesting. I did wonder though if any companies like Habitat, John Lewis or even Ikea ever have any discontinued stock that's cheap (unsold) or am I just being over optimistic?
Anyway, as I say thanks for the tips everyone!!

Ikea stores have a bargain corner, I know someone who was quite jammy and picked up a dining table worth £100 for £20. But whenever I look most is ex-display and it already built and have some sort of damage or wear to it.

I second ebay for buying furniture you can get some great prices because the audience is smaller due to most offering collection only.

Also try Freecycle. I gave away a nice computer desk a few years ago and bookshelves. In return I've received a frost free fridge freezer which is fab.

http://localbargainfinder.co.uk/ also finds ebay collect only stuff local to you.

There may be a Hospice warehouse local to you. Worth a look as the furniture donated to the Hospice movement tends to be good quality.I bought an Ercol coffee table at my local one for £6 - on ebay they go for around £100.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • I'm sure your area has some form of publication similar. It is a vehicle to sell household and other items. I get the one from the upscale area around where I live (Scottsdale, AZ). I look for the type of furniture I need. I always find great prices on extremely good pieces. For some reason people, mostly wealthy people I've found, think their furniture is less valuable than is the case.

I am not sure how one would define naff furniture. Almost any style would be considered naff by someone. For instance, I consider a lot of very expensive furniture to be completely naff. I am recent convert to IKEA, some of their designs are very ingenious. Often Ikea is derided by people just because it is not expensive. I feel that this is a pretty specious and snobbish complaint. If I was in the market to start furnishing again, (unlikely at my age), I would make IKEA my first port of call.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
