  • i did pumpkin pie last year as they were on bogof so one went in the window and the other in a pie,

i cut it into chunks and put it in a pan with a little sugar, then i put it in a pie dish with pasty on the top, i had it with icecream, hubby had it with cream and son with custard, make sure you add sugar or it tastes a bit bland.

Yes, you can eat all pumpkins. I have bought several small pumpkins this year in Mr. T 's. Cooked soup in my SC several times and used pumpkin in a veggie casserole. I would think the larger ones are better value.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

Could I have your pumplin soup recipe please? I have three pumplin growing in the veg patch (was a first time experiment to grow them, I didn't expect three to come up!). Mine are not orange all over, should I wait until they are orange, does it effect the ripeness/flavour?
  • Also have pumpkin soup and roast pumpkin recipies for anyone who wants, We love pumpkin in this house!!!

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)
  • Use small to medium size pumpkins. Clean and slice meat from the rind. Cut pumpkin into squares and bake in a covered 4.5 liter (or larger) dish. Bake at around 200 degrees for 30 minutes or until pumpkin is very tender. Remove and put immediately into a blender and make puree.

Use this step to substitute the canned pumpkin,
Sorry all in american measurments etc Im lazy and work of those but maybe another OS can convert...

There are actually a couple of different types of pumpkin, the large ones tend to be more watery and make better soup and stew etc, smaller ones are sweeter and better for pie or roasting, Some dont really look like pumpkins at all (well not the ones you see for carving ) and these are the yummiest...!!:D

You might also be interested in a savoury recipe which was given to me by a lady called Jane in Maine. (I kid you not!). Jane said she always made a double quantity as it got eaten so fast. I can confirm it is very delicious.
NB the measures and temperatures are in American, so you might need to convert!
To make buttered breadcrumbs, take plain ones, melt some butter in a frying pan, remove from the heat and stir in the breadcrumbs.
Personally, I like onion so I would probably use a little bit more than a teaspoon, and I might grate a bit of nutmeg on top.

    Maine Squash (or Pumpkin) Casserole

    3 cups hot mashed squash
    1/4 cup butter
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
    1 teaspoon minced onion
    1/4 cup milk
    3 eggs, well beaten
    1/4 cup buttered breadcrumbs

Add butter to hot squash. Beat until smooth & butter has melted. Stir in salt, pepper & onion.
Blend milk into eggs. Add to squash.
Pour into greased 1.5 quart casserole & top with breadcrumbs.
Set in a roasting tin of warm water and bake in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 45 minutes until knife inserted in centre comes out clean.
    Serves 6.
  • Have posted a pumpkin recipe thread that has recipies for pies, soups breads muffins cookies and more on OS so please check it out and add any recipies you may have.... I'm a big pumpkin head and didn't want to hijack the thread with all my many recipies as when I get recipe posting I tend to get a bit post happy!!!!
