Has anyone taken excess baggage over airline limit for free

Hi,
A quick question. Have you been lucky and were you able to take over the stipulated amount of 20kg's per passenger for long haul flights?
Flying with Cathay Pacific in a couple of weeks and we may be a bit over but thought I would ask anyway rather than get to the airport and have to throw away some of my things .
Thanks!

Give them a call, I am flying Singaporeair with 20kg limit. I called them, thought bit was a bit mean, and they said they allow up to 25 kg at checkin0

I tried Cathay earlier but missed office hours. I will ask them and see what they say. Thanks though. I have also read that Singapore Air allow double baggage allowances if you have a one way ticket. Just something I read today!

Thanks for the link, I'm flying Emirates to NZ at Xmas and can bring more stuff now!
OP - I have been allowed to fly with more than the 20kgs coming back from Toronto airport once. However that was with now difunct airline Zoom, and it was the day after the attempted terrorist attacks in UK in Aug 2005. We had our flight delayed by 24hrs and they were quite leniant with most people.

When you usually fly with BA, Lufthansa, SAS etc...if it's a kilo or 2 or 3 they don't seem to care so much..from my experience anyways but I bet that's not the case with Ryan Air or EasyJet but do try to call and see the airlines says.

You don't say if you're flying one way or not-but if this is a holiday it might be better to rethink the packing as you're bound to do a fair bit of shopping out there and it'd be a shame if those bargains became non bargains due to excess baggage charges if you'll be adding even more to your weight on your way home .
My general experience with Far East airlines in general is often they have more generous allowances BUT they are less flexible about bending rules than some other carriers so it'll be the allowance they quote with very little wriggle room.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
