i had what looked like a genuine e-mail from alliance and leicester. it warned about postal strikes and paying on time.
as i knew that my statement was due and i wanted to check the balance on the account i clicked on the link.
normally i am very careful about things like this but my oh was next to me talking about finances and i happily typed in my details. it would not let me log in...
that worried me. so i phoned alliance and leicester using the number from a postal statement. the girl on the phone was not sure about the e-mail and i was worried about the web address so my account has now been blocked.
not completly sure if this is a scam e-mail but i wanted to protect myself and warn other people in case they get similar e-mails about postal strikes to not use the links.
anyway, panic over for me but please everyone be careful

Make sure you change your account password, security question, the whole kaboodle.
As a rule of thumb, a genuine email from a bank / creditor / etc will NOT contain a link to the banks website. ONLY EVER visit the website from typing the address in YOURSELF and NEVER follow a link in an email!!
It's very likely to be a phishing scam, especially since it didn't let you log in Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48 Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

i know!!! so very very silly of me:o
after a long day at work we were chatting about money and an e-mail came through. normally i am so very careful. but it was part of the conversation we were having about interest rates... as soon as i did it i knew it was not right...
you are completely right and i was very silly
now i realise how easy it is for them to get your details. b***ards!
do you think i should contact my other credit card companies just in case?

            Bless you not to worry.
As long as you have contacted the bank who's online login details you put into the scam website, and asked them to set up a new password / security stuff, that should be absolutely fine.
Easily mistake to make if you are mid conversation, this time I doubt any harm has been done Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48 Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Ive had two of these recently one from Halifax and the other from Alliance & Leicester. I don't even bank with any of them!!!!! These emails must be doing the rounds again.0

Well the one I had from MBNA concerning my A&L card had my name on it and had the last 4 digits of my card as per their usual way of contacting me.0
-
I have just had an email off MBNA to get me to sign up to online banking due to the postal strikes, But I am already online banker.
It didnt look suspicious to me, but I also havent clicked a link off it either.0

Yeah - I had one from MBNA too but I just deleted it as I can't bear to have any contact with them!0

Unless you actually get an email off someone you REALLY know you should ignore ALL other emails.
It's a simple but perfect rule. Banks and people who have to contact you will do it by letter or phone and even if it's the phone I'd expect to phone them back on a number from your own paperwork.
All other mail is spam, scam or an email telling you you just bought something or it's been posted.0

I got one from MBNA and disregarded it as I always try and stay a step ahead with my statements etc, but I'm going to sift my deleted items now to see if it was a fake0

The emails will always be fake if they contain a link to a login screen, without a doubt.
