Credit card fraud £130 on an unused card.

I had a barclaycard that has gone unused since June 2008. Wanted to cancel but decided to keep just in case I could make use of their 6.9% life of balance BT. Received statement this morning that included a £130 charge for a travelodge in an asian country I have never booked or heard of.

The card has been in a folder of mine since June of last year, and had been used around 8-9 times since January 2008.

Should I be worried that in the report they wont believe me? :(

  • I dont think you should worry. Aslong as you can prove you were nowhere near the country in question when it happened (which Im sure is easy) then there should be no problem.

If the card holder says he did not authorise the disputed transaction - he has to prove absolutely nothing ! It is the bank's problem not yours.

This is in the Banking Code.

Seems like quite common cardholder not present fraud. Ring Barclaycard and they'll probably send you a declaration form to fill in, but the refund should be a formality. Only time you'll have a problem with fraud transactions is when the chip has been read, which won't be the case if you've had the card in your possession the whole time.
