Late payment on credit file : (

Last month I set up a direct debit payment on my Barclaycard and expected this month's payment to go out by direct debit, but it didn't  I have now had a late payment charge of £12.00 and will get a mark on my credit file.

I am so mad as before this I have paid more than the minimum payment, on time without fail and now this. When I queried it with them they told me it takes up to 8 weeks for this to be set up which is ridiculous.

I made a payment of £25.00 on October 2nd, thinking this would be in addition to the direct debit payment that would go out a few days ago but of course this has not happened.

Barclaycard have agreed to give me the £12.00 back but will not amend my credit record as it is my fault.

Just really worried as my boyfriend & I are looking to buy a house together next spring/summer and worried this will affect our chances

My credit score is not brilliant but I always pay on time and am trying so hard to pay my debts back. Wish I'd never done this stupid direct debit in the first place.

Any comments on my credit record gratefully received x

I doubt one late payment would hinder you but if there are other things then it all adds up.

The effect of a manual payment, when a direct debit is active on your account, varies between lenders, so we all need to make sure we understand what happens to the DD if we make additional payments.

With Barclaycard, if a manual payment is made, regardless of the amount, no money is taken by DD that month.

That said, a single late payment, in the context of an otherwise perfect payment history, will not damage your credit history. It's your payment history with all your creditors over the last 6 years that counts, with particular emphasis on the most recent 12 months ;)

Thanks - yes my credit file is fine. Score is a little bit low as I have about £7k of debt but have just paid off a credit card in full, a loan ends in 2 months and my overdraft will be at zero in 9 months so am going the right way!!! :o

If you are looking to get a mortgage next year you ideally need to get rid of all the debts and have substantial deposit as well if FTB's.

Good luck with it all, sounds like you're on the right path :)
  • If you paid before the next payment, its likely not to get marked at all. Usually it only puts missed payments on credit file. (though not sure with the new setup now). Even then, missing 1 was never really much cause for concern.

    - You won't get a late marker unless the account is atleast 30 days late ;)

Lenders' procedures vary. From feedback here, Barclaycard always reports late payments, even when staff have promised otherwise

Then again, depends on where your payment due date falls in relation to credit reference agency updates. If they happen to process the CRA batch run a day or so after your payment is due, even a couple of days late is marked '1' on credit files. As above, this is nothing to lose sleep over.

OP, your slip-up with B'card becomes steadily less significant as time goes by. By next January, your credit report should look something like this:
    000100000000
showing that you've maintained your B'card account perfectly ever since ;)
