Mouse keeps freezing

Bit of a frustrating one as it's intermittent.
PC running XP sp2.
Cursor keeps stopping moving at random times.
Keyboard still works.
I think the mouse is fine because it is connected to another PC through a KVM switch.
Only cure is to reboot which doesn't always get it moving again.
Any thoughts?

does the mouse and keyboard still work if you try without the KVM switch?
does the problem happen on BOTH machines using the KVM switch?
is they keyboard and mouse on seperate connections? Meaning not on a usb/PS2 combined set?
what model is the keyboard and mouse?

The mouse doesn't work if I bypass the KVM or try another mouse.
All works fine on the other machine through the KVM.
The keyboard and mouse are on their own PS2 lead each (through the KVM).
The keyboard is a normal wired windows 98 keyboard. The mouse is a wired optical one (from PC world last month, abou £20).0 -

check on both PCs that the KVM cables are securely inserted.
it maybe that the "other non-working machine" has damaged PS2 ports etc...
the mouse/keyboard hardware is working because it is fine on other machines.
the KVM isnt the culprit.
The "other-machine" is it old or older than the one that works?"See you on the Other Side"0 -

The machine that the mouse works on is the newest (about 2 years old). The other is about 6 years old. Can a damaged PS2 port be repaired? Or should I just go and get a USB mouse?0 -
thing is the PS2 port on the old machine is what connects to the KVM switch - Im not sure if you connect an adaptor to the KVM PS2 port for the mouse to a USB port on the old machine.
can a PS2 be repaired - I'm sure your local PC shop will be able to do it. The parts are cheap and labour should be an hour tops - but depends how easy to replace the PS2 port is!

Simple suggestion for you but...Have you Tried cleaning the mouse?
ha ha ha0 -
also noticed the machine that is locking up is XP with SP2 - being an older machine might mean incompatability issues with XP SP2.
I have 2 of my PCs running vanilla XP Pro because SP2 causes problems.
That might be another suggestion - strip the machine down and start again."See you on the Other Side"0 -
I have solved this. Asked a mate who is into computers and the KVM needs to pick up a voltage from the computer to make it work.
So cycling through both computers makes it work. This always cures it.0
