Small kitchen - would you have a sink with no drainer?

We have a dishwasher, so to maxmise space would you go without a draining board next to the sink?

It would be a stainless steel sink, on its own and a laminate worktop so unfortunately not a lovely ceramic sink and wooden worktop, which would look fine without a drainer.

do you think this would look odd?

No I wouldn't, because there will still be things you might want to wash by hand. I've got a dishwasher and there are some things I don't put in it so need a draining board.

There some kinds of sink tops that come with a cover for the draining board, like a wooden or glass food preparation board or something, that might be an idea to give you the option of a draining board and/or usable space. I'm sure I saw something in the Franke range when I was looking for ours.

We did in our first flat. We had a round bowl, laminate worktop, no dishwasher and no drainer. We had a plate dryer but we didn't really use it, just to rest plates before they were dried up properly. No one died because we didn't have a drainer! And when we sold, it sold to the first viewer.

If you want space, have space. With a dishwasher you're fine - you can dry the odd piece of wahing up straight away; you'll never avoid the fact that it all has to go in the cupboard at some point anyway, drainer or no drainer.

yes, kitchen plans are now a long way off due to escalating costs of other things but that doesnt stop me standing in my kitchen umming and arhhing and looking at it from all different angles all the time!

so i was there today, looking at the sink and wondering why on earth it needs to be so big and then why on earth it has to have a drainer, which quite simply is more shiny stuff to clean.
i did look at some small sinnks with drainers but i need a full size bowl and dont really like a drainer if im honest,

i think when the time comes, i will just get a bowl and no drainer

We had a new kitchen this year, fitted by myself all for £900. That included getting a tiler in.

We bought the oven from B&Q as ex-display, the cooker hood from comet as ex-display, as well as the splashback for 99p. Then we had the HOB which was new for £199, paid for by some currys vouchers. Then the rest in the B&Q sales...

Cheap and cheerful...but alot of hard work.

would it be worth looking at the sinks you can get for camper-vans etc where you have a worksurface that folds up to allow access to the sink but folds down when you need more surface space? like this

  • We live in a flat and have a very small kitchen. We have a dishwasher, sink and drainer - we never use the drainer. I think it is a waste of space.

I was thinking of you when my Lakeland catalogue arrived this morning.

They have this range of kitchen drainers, racks and tray combos etc so the tray catches everything or they are angled to drain into the sink. Many different variations so have a look there if you still want to go without a drainer as these can go into a cupboard

Our sink has a worktop saver that fits over the top of the drainer bit (and the sink bit if you prefer) so that you can use it for chopping and draining/washing.
