Refunds Via Cheque

Hi
I recently bought a car that broke down after less than a week. The dealer included 3months waranty so i took it back to them and when they investigated they offered me my money back or another similar priced car of the lot.
I decided to get my money back as there was nothing i wanted around the same price so now they are sorting that out but it seems they are going to try and pay me back by cheque.
The problem is I will be stuck without a car until the cheque clears and i can afford to buy a replacement
I paid for the car by debit card. Can i force them to refund the money back to my debit card? If not, can I keep the curtesy car until the check clears, after all, they would not let me drive away in a car that i paid for by cheque before it cleared.
Thanks
Ben

i am no expert on this but i would want the money put back on my card. have they given you a reason why they have to give you a cheque?0

No, they have predictably been draging their heels about the whole thing. I've got the name of the after sales care manager so im gonna ring him this afternoon, i dont expect to get through to him though, the reception will likley screen the call.0

well that is par for the course with dealers. i am sure someone will be along to give you some advice, sorry i could not be of more help0

Most likely the person you spoke to just doesn't know how to do refunds on the card system, but does know how to write a cheque.
A cheque will clear in 3 days. Debit card refunds do not always go through immediately. If I were you I would take the cheque and bank it immediately. You may spend longer then 3 days convincing them to get someone to do the refund onto your card.0 -
Plus, card refunds can themselves often take a few days to reach your account.0

I have heard it take upto 30days for a debit card refund to go though I have seen up to ten days. The cheque would clear in 3days while a card can take longer.0
