I think that may have been a mis-type.......i think it might have meant to have been C.A.B......

  • Just a "quicky". I purchased a exercise bike to help me with my mobility. When I ordered it the Kind lady said at that time, "Was I disabled", as I replied "yes". She told me that their would be no V.A.T. Payable as this was for my use as a disabled person.
Thought this info. might help some one.

I got today a booklet titled "if you think our decsion is wrong" and a form in the back GL24. I plan to appeal but I dont have a great deal of evidence. My daughter has CMT, disclocated hip and cant walk far about 10 minutes before she is tired. She alos poor circulation and we have to have heating on more in Winter.

I accept there are far worse cases, I just really want some help with heating costs for her. I have also applied for a blue badge, as she cant walk to town anymore and have a normal teenage life like most kids have.

Get help filling in the GL24 and with the appeal. Contact Citizens Advice or other Welfare Benefits advisors in your area to help you. There is more success if you attend an appeal in person and more success again if you take a representative (from Citizens Advice etc.).

Don't forget to get to an advisor as soon as possible because

you only have a month to appeal.

I had great "alugh" when i read the medical reports from my examinations some years back when my SDA was toped and i was declared fit for work. The doctors had included completely irrelavant and ridiculous information and had often drawn mad conclusions (I coudl take my shoes off quickly, therefor i was fit for work.)

Sadly this seems to be happening more and more. A friend of mine has had her beenfit stopped, she suffers from arthrtitis and a bad back, when she asked for a copy of the report the dodctor ahd stated "she goes to visit her son in Scotland at least twice a year" - somethgin she had NEVER said, and more amusingly "She attends cinema and restuarants regularly" - utter RUBBISH as there isn't even a cinema in the town she lives and she can't remember the last time she went to a restuarant!

My most insulting moment was when a doctor, when asking my hobbies (which including writing) said "Oh well you're obviously not stupid then!" - I wasn't aware stupidty was what i was claiming was making me unfit to work!
  • Hi I'm new to all this, but had my IB turned down a couple of years ago even though I was awarded Higher rate DLA the same week. There is a great site which really helped me through my appeal, not sure if any of you have used it before. I think you have to register (free) before you can use the forum. Go to the link, on the left hand column click forums, once logged in got to benefits and help is there. I won my appeal and couldnt have done it without their help...good luck!

If you are running out of time to appeal, phone the DLA section up and ask for a written statement of reasons as this allows a further 2 weeks on the 1 month - and provides grounds for the decision (if told over the phone you will not catch all that is said).

This is a very useful site - been mentioned on this forum before:

Poppycat, what's CMT? - BTW your daughter won't get high rate mobility as she is not virtually unable to walk - she can walk for 10 minutes without having to stop due to severe discomfort. Nowadays they will turn you down if you are able to walk more than 50 yards - about 10 car lengths.

Should also mention that these BHAS guides are somewhat dated and new updated guides by the same authors are available from Downloadable guides to claiming welfare benefits for a small fee. (in proportion to the DLA you may be awarded.

Probably correct. They do take into account the manner and style of walking so if the 10minutes walking didn't achieve much distance and was really impractical for all intents and purposes then you might be lucky at appeal. You've got to think about the weather in the UK and if the manner of walking is so slow and unreliable it isn't reasonable to regard it as walking. Keeping a diary, taking a video of maximum progress on a bad day would be evidence to support an appeal.

Thanks Ted - unsure of your last quote though - there's no comment associated with it.
Poppcat, sorry for harsh words in posting, should have said 'highly unlikely' rather than 'won't' get high rate mob - I appreaciate the regs are more complicated can just a distance but from experience the distance is a huge factor in extablishing entitlement.
Out of curiosity, who was the golfing EMP? Was it a guy called Malin (or something similar)

Thanks Chuffy I dont dispute that I be happy to get something just to help out, we dont have a lot of cash and I cant work either due to long term health problems, I only get IB and OH wages which isnt a lot. I dont think they took into account her needs for warmth, if eldery people can get help and many are well off, why cant they help my daughter who is just as vunerable.

I only rang them up to ask for help with fuel as its really having a huge impact on our budget what with hike in fuel and now we need it on more, even today its on, on and evening. Thankfully we got a better boiler due to a insulation grant so that may help.
