Dell all-in-one Fax setup help

Can anybody help me please. I have installed a Dell all-in-one printer which includes a Fax capability. The house only has one telephone line which I would like to use for both Voice and Fax calls. All is well except that, for receiving a fax, the machine cannot tell the difference between a fax call and a voice call - if set to "all ring patterns" or "2 rings" it answers the call, if set to any other ring pattern it ignores the call.
Is there a setting that can be changed, or any other way, that this type of machine can recognise the different type of call ?
Any help would be much apreciated.
